Bert Monterona
Bert Monterona obtained his formal education at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, Major in Architectural Drafting Technology in 1985. Bert spent his formative years in Mindanao, inspired by the traditional cultures of the Muslims and Lumads. His themes revolve around protecting nature and the environment and promoting a culture of peace. As a muralist, he has done large works about child rights, women exploitation, peasants and workers issues, Indigenous people issues, and a mural painting on the campaign for the protection of the environment and peace-building.
These themes are portrayed not just in the medium of ordinary stretched canvas, but in tapestry paintings using natural dye, textile paint and acrylics. The wall hanging – tapestries are a celebration of indigenous culture, its myths, rituals, and artistic expressions.
Monterona has won numerous awards locally and abroad, including Finalist in the Philip Morris Group of Companies Annual Philippine and ASEAN Art Award (1996,1997,1998,2000 & 2001) and winner in the GSIS and the Art Association of the Philippines painting competitions.
He has launched major solo exhibits in Hong Kong, Australia, and Canada where he has resided during the last decade.
